A Graphic Cosmogony

A Graphic Cosmogony is a comics compendium by the ever-amazing publisher NoBrow. It features comics by 24 artists, each telling their version of a tale about the formation of the universe. Or something.

Some of my favorite artists are represented, like Stuart Kolakovic and Mikkel Sommer (previously posted). The whole package is a beautiful thing...

Happy Birthday Lindsay!

Today was Lindsay's birthday! Wow!

We celebrated by going to a 4 hour long cake decorating class for the beginning of the day...

...and then having some close friends over and partying all night with her new present; a Kinect and a copy of Dance Central!

The best picture of the night was taken towards the very end of the night by our friend Chris. This is Adam tearing it up like only he can:

To be honest, the technology worked pretty flawlessly (especially considering we had 3+ people dancing at once, with dogs milling around our feet) and it was a blast. Everyone was laughing, sweating and dancing like crazy!

The only one still skeptical was Oliver the Cat. He just can't be pleased.

All-in-all, it was a pretty low-key, but super fun day! Happy birthday Lindsay!

Wayne White

Wayne White's word paintings are impressive and funny. There are hundreds of them to click through on his site, so obviously there's too many great ones to post.

But what makes Wayne White even more awesome is that he was a designer for Pee-Wee's Playhouse and won three Emmys for his work! Awesome!

Kim Holm

I remember when deer imagery was really cool. Then, a while later, it was kinda played out. Whether it's in or not, this music video, created by Kim Holm for Matta, rocks my face.

Paperfox Press

Paperfox Press is a team of four illustrators from the United Kingdom. I was drawn to them in principle–a team of illustrators! They do collaborative work! It was even more exciting when I found out they've made posters for Artcrank, their own British version of the thing we know and love.

the Broadview Blog

Take a gander at the digital landscape/setting work of Robh, who is my new favorite cg painting master. His pieces look photo real, but he's also generous enough to include some process that makes it very clear these aren't photographs.

You can see close up views of his pieces on the blog. He also has an assortment of beautiful plein air paintings. He makes on them on his iPad, naturally.

Graham Annable

Graham Annable's art and animation is unmistakable; the sketchy line work, bizarre humor and lingering, tension-filled static shots...

I recently introduced Lindsay to his work via the stellar Puzzle Agent, a puzzle-based, Fargo-inspired videogame. She's been a fan ever since (despite never being able to remember his name).

I saw via his Twitter that he just put up a new animation, The Smartest Dog in the World.

You can see all his animations on his youtube page.

On a side note, I was stoked to hear Telltale Games is continuing the Puzzle Agent series:

Perfect!

Inspired By Iceland

Another post about Iceland? Yes. Deal with it. It's a magical place.

After our 8 day trip around Iceland last year, it's rare that a day goes by without thinking about how awesome it was.

Seeing this official video promoting Iceland, created for Inspired By Iceland, just makes me want to go back even more. Just remember to get a big 4x4 to cross those rivers!

Aw yeah! See you there, sucka!

Campbell Whyte

Campbell Whyte is taking on a pretty huge challenge: making a piece of art for every Nintendo game released (English-language releases only) in the order they were released.

The series is off to a strong start, with Campbell making one small painting a day. But with about 800 Nintendo games to work through, he'll be doing it for a while. Good luck!

Crazy Days and Scandinavian Goodies

Super Cute Tea Towel ($18)

I stumbled upon this amazing site, www.huset-shop.com, which has what seems like a million and one amazingly designed Scandinavian-designed products! Here are some of my favorites.

Blossom & Bill Mugs
($15)

It's been a long day today - things have been a little out of the ordinary, with judging merits for MCAD's finest, working through figuring out next year's teaching schedule, catching up on Paper Bicycle designs for our awesome clients, and then running critique tonight in the Product Design course I teach. I am forever grateful for the awesome students who make each day exciting for me, and for my amazing co-workers who make the crazy days enjoyable and relaxing.

Gorgeous Modern Coat Rack ($630)

I walked to the office today from MCAD, which is a 15 minute walk, though the 30 degree weather (seemed delightful compared to the frigid weather of last week). It was gorgeous. Everyone in the office helped get me back into my usual happy-mode and I have to admit, 15 minutes of looking over this site re-energized me.

Amazing Melamine Sushi Set ($49)

Tonight, I'm taking it easy and finishing up a couple small designs before bed and class tomorrow. This semester's been crazy, and after all this I think I might splurge and get myself one or two of these cute things as a "hooray, you made it!" gift.

Dan Mountford

Dan Mountford created this series of photos, titled The Worlds Inside Of Us, all in camera. He obscured parts of the lens while shooting double exposures, and the results are quite nice.

Conan O'Brien Kinetic Typography

Everyone loves Conan O'Brien. I remember my friend and I watching The Late Show during his first season.

We were quite young but I distinctly remember thinking 'This is outstanding... and bizarre. This is like something from a cable-access channel. But on a network.' I felt like no one was watching yet, which gave Conan and Andy Richter license to go nuts.

While I don't have the time to tune in anymore, I still consider him one of my favorite TV personalities. He's really smart, funny and a class act. A perfect example is his goodbye speech when he left NBC and the Tonight Show.

Jacob Gilbreath used the dialogue as the basis for a kinetic typography project. Not only is is a treat to watch, it makes the words seem that more more important and universal.

Daniel Egneus

The work of illustrator Daniel Egneus is both beautiful and haunting. He creates characters and environments that seemingly exist only in dreams.

Wow! Check out these amazing cut paper typography pieces, hand cut by Julene Harrison!

The best part? They can be made to order, so if you want a portrait, a wedding, birthday or holiday greeting, they are done specially for you!

Hey! I've got a couple pieces in Altered Esthetic's March show; the theme was Fanboi! I love video games so it was a no brainer!

Here's Mega Man villain; Chillman!

Vhils

Alexandre Farto (aka Vhils) is a Portuguese street artist who uses unconventional materials and scale to create his art.

In this video for Orelha Negra, he turns the art into performance by using explosives to do the dirty work.

Artifact Bag Co.

I don't know about you, but I'm always on the hunt for a really good bag. Something kind of big, but not too big, and sturdy, and aesthetically appealing but a little bit plain. I was really excited to see that Artifact Bag Co. has a messenger bag in the works.
